NCELP is presenting a series of sessions at the Embrace MFL Conference on 20th June 2022

Victoria Hobson, Leader of CPD at NCELP, is presenting at the MFL Conference 2022 hosted by Embrace Teaching School Hub in Leyland, Lancashire.
The day will include six sessions to develop practical teaching ideas linking to freely available resources in French, German and Spanish. The morning session includes an introduction to NCELP pedagogy and resources, and the afternoon session looks at the new subject content for GCSE French, German and Spanish and curriculum development.
Session 1: 9.00 – 9.45am, How does explicit phonics teaching make a difference?
In this session, we focus on research-informed practice for explicitly teaching, consolidating and
applying the sound-writing relationship in secondary language learning.
Session 2: 9.45 – 10.30am, Teaching vocabulary – What’s in a word?
In this session we explore key questions such as: What does it mean to know a word? How many words
do learners need to know? How can they best learn and retain those words?
Session 3: 10.45 – 11.30am, Grammar – Contrasting pairs, making the most of input
This session aims to develop understanding of a research and practice-informed approach to selecting,
sequencing, and teaching grammar. The principles draw on research about how learners attend to and
process the input they hear and read, how they retain information, and the role of practice.
Session 4: 11.30am – 12.30pm, Curriculum design – bringing the three strands of phonics, vocabulary and grammar together within a Scheme of Work
In this ‘hands-on’ session, you will have an opportunity to explore the NCELP SOW, accompanying
resources and resource collections, all freely available on the NCELP Resource Portal.
Session 5: 1.15 – 2.00pm, Understanding the new subject content for GCSE French, German and Spanish
The background and rationale for the changes, the main similarities and differences between the
current (2015) and the new (2022) GCSE Subject Content documents, the implications for teaching and
assessment answers to key questions to inform curriculum development planning going forward.
Session 6: 2 – 3.00pm, Collaborative planning – implementing key takeaways
A dedicated opportunity for MFL colleagues to work together and share ideas on how to enact
curriculum developments and develop classroom practice in light of the conference content.
